Earlier this year, eBay switched their affiliate program over from Commission Junction to an in-house program, eBay Partner Network. I had applied for the affiliate program when it was still with CJ, and got a ‘No thanks’ from them. ‘Aha!’ I thought. CJ was obviously the problem – eBay’s own program will be much more enlightened and forward-thinking.
As it turns out, eBay still unfortunately could not accept my application at that time. I know they must have been devastated.
Fortunately, that may have been a blessing in disguise. It seems that many people who were relying on eBay Partner Network for an income were suddenly and unceremoniously dropped from the program a month ago.
Judging by the share performance, which has dropped from around $40 in October last year to under $24 today, eBay’s shareholders aren’t too excited about the way the company is being run.
Is the world’s largest online auction site poised at the brink of a precipice? Has the corporate mentality taken over? Are they going to continue to alienate their partners, users and supporters?

My mugshot.
Thanks for the interesting and useful information. Written well worth waiting for the next record.
Thanks for sharing. I was one of the numerous customers that got dropped in the program. Fortunately, I guess am quiet lucky with the recent drop in share price as shown in Google news.
It really doesn’t make sense but then again a lot of times I can never sure what these large companies are thinking when they make decisions like this. Really feel for the people that got dropped from the program. I know a lot of them relied on them for a large portion of their income and I that can really hurt.

Everything I’ve heard about Ebay is that they’re getting worse, and I wasn’t impressed a few years ago when I tried my first attempt at online marketing.
What do they offer? A shopping cart? those programs are available for independent webmasters at reasonable prices. Promotion? They can’t even guarantee that someone will look at the items you’ve got for sale. Trust? Almost everyone has an Ebay horror story by now…
Obviously, they should see independent affiliates and smaller webmasters as serious competition. IMO, the best way they could survive that threat is to cooperate with more affiliates. Instead, they seem to think they are too big to fail…

Yes, they seem to be on a ‘self-destruct’ these days. They don’t realize that they need the little guy. They took digital, download products off the table / shelf, then here in Australia they were up against a Govt agency for anti-competitive practices of insisting everyone uses Paypal. They are bully boys. I never liked their fees where you pay them even if your stuff doesn’t sell! What? GD.

Yes, looks like they are having problems in their house. Recently they have even changed payment terms.
On the other hand, problem with Network problem could be looked from the other side. Maybe they are filtering out partners base to make the program more efficient. Who knows?
But, as their shares are down now, it must be something is happing over there. We will see.

yea im not sure why ebay has headed in this direction but they are clearly spiraling downward, at least with their business to the little guys.
We should be prepared since everything changes.
I think ebays’ insider should know the resons.
Commission Junction’s site is impossible to navigate so I was relieved when they moved the affiliate program in-house. But it doesn’t seem to have made much difference.
eBay’s fees at times can be outrageous. Affiliates being dropped just adds to the growing feeling I should drop eBay all together.
I agree on what JB said. All things are changing so all we have to do is to be prepared and expect the unexpected.
I attended the Ebay Live! and developer conferences in Chicago in June.
A few observations:
1) The company is too large and has whoel departments (for example advocacy of health reform so people can sell on Ebay full-time) that are questionable in terms of company vision.
2) Skype – just Google about the hire of the recent COO hire – running the business off old the rules – which will not lead to growth and advancement in user experience. Ebay needs to be hiring executives with high potential for future breakthroughs.
3) The most valuable gem in terms of growth potenial is Paypal – but will this growth potential be fully realized?

eBay has been making some very daring moves the last couple of months and it makes me wonder who’s making these decisions? and What are they trying to accomplish? It almost seems like knee jerk reactions, like they aren’t thinking before they sign off on these things. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
Ebay has gone downhill steadily. First they kept raising rates despite doing nothing to help sellers and of course the no negative feedback ruling for sellers was a disaster. After ten years of perfect and frequent usage I’d just assume give my extra stuff to charities.
Yeah! You are right and this past few months I was really disappointed on Ebay for some reason.

I am having problems with Ebay too. but I still love it and sell my stuff.
I really love Ebay no matter what. I sell a lot of my things on Ebay and it help us a lot.
I also was rejected by Ebay US to their affiliate program, so I decide to try Amazon with good results. I check ebay forums and also read that a lot of people is disappointed with the new EPN.
You should try Amazon and Overstock
Well, eBay right now is at 12.36 per share, does that mean that eBay is a good investment right now?
I am debating whether or not to invest into eBay.

i’m really disappointed in ebay, i haven’t sold anything in past 2 years
I knew eBay was having issues but I didn’t think it was this bad. I signed up to the EPN about 6 months ago and made a little money with it but once I started reading posts all over the place that said they randomly dropped affiliates I decided it was too risky to spend time building websites around.

@Dave, The issue has been resolved. This is an old post.
The post is old but the reality is that ebay doesn’t bring us a lot of money as he did…

I think ebay is good. I have been selling a few of my items on it and it works well for me. I know many of my friends have faced difficulties with it, but so far its worked well for me
I used to purchase my kids’ stuff from ebay, there are some great sellers, when we received the clothes, they are very nicely wrapped in nice package and smells very good too!

Well, I think its a mixed opinion that people have about Ebay. Its worked fine for me so far but my friends have had bad experiences with it.

I think their insistence of routing all payments through Paypal is singularly galling. Also the fixed charge one pays, whether you are able to sell or not, must be overhauled.
Ebay is also out there to make profit, gentlemen. And yes some will like them and some wont. Its part of the way their business operates
They must needs change the payment route. All payments through Paypal should be removed.
Ebay has served its purpose rather well, I think. As a business model, its more worth emulating than being critical of. Its shortcomings can be learnt to be avoided.
Ebay isnt doing any good to its users. High time it mends things up.
I wonder what were the ebay insiders thinking. They surely would have anticipated a backlash.
Its a mixed bag of views I have on Ebay. I consider it a convenient mode of transaction but I am unhappy with their “payment thru paypal” only system.
Is there any alternative to Ebay anyway? And will it be just as convenient?
