Upgrading to WordPress 2.7
By Derrick | December 30, 2008
I’ve taken the plunge and upgraded this blog to WordPress 2.7. I tried it out on a couple of my niche blogs first, and it was pretty straight forward. A couple of plugins had to be upgraded as well, but this is simple (if a little time consuming).
WP 2.7 has a number of changes which I really like. For starters, you will be able to upgrade to the next version from within the admin panel. I have been using the WordPress Automatic Upgrade plugin for a couple of months now, and it’s made life a lot easier. But having the upgrade function built into WordPress should be an improvement.
Modules – many of the functions on the edit screens (like ‘Categories’, ‘Tags’ and ‘Custom Fields’) have been changed to modules, which you can move around as you like. You can also decide which ones to show, using the new ‘Screen options’ tab.
Quick Edit – this allows you to edit most of the meta data for a post or page (the title, author, tags etc) without having to load the full edit page. This functionality is based on the Manageable plugin by Aaron Harp (which I discovered a month ago!)
Comments – comments can now be paginated (split into multiple pages) and can be threaded (a commenter can reply to a specific comment in its own thread).
Built-in Plugin Browser – you can now search for and install plugins from within the admin panel.
There’s a complete list of the changes on the WordPress site.

Glad your upgrade went well. I’ll also been a die hard user of the automatic upgrade plugin for some time. It will be nice to have one less plugin though. What ever you can do to slim down the site.

I’m a big fan of threaded comments.
Just makes replying to what other people have said that much more organized, and makes it easier to follow the conversation.

I love 2.7. But I’m not sure I like the new left-side nav. I did at first, but it is now a little annoying to have to scroll down for menu items that used to be at the top of the screen.

Good review on WordPress 2.7. I am new in Blogging, and I downloaded the 2.7 version. I like the Quick Edit feature. Thanks.

I like the new feature of WP 2.7 where you can easily install plug-in from the dashboard w/o downloading it from the source and uploading it to the site. It save me a lot of time.

I decided to try out 2.7 just recently with a couple of sites and I like it much better than 2.5 or 2.6.
I actually held off upgrading my blogs from 2.3.3 as I didn’t care for the interface in either 2.5 or 2.6.
But, with the clean dashboard presented in 2.7, I think I will have to upgrade all of my site – I just love the new version!

Up until the last Wordpress update I use to avoid upgrading like the plague. Seriously, I would rather clean the toilet than upgrade my blogs. I finally figured out that my hosting service offer a “one click” upgrade which makes this so much easier.
Anyway, to get back on topic, I really like the new 2.7 platform. I like how they structured the menu bar on the right. I really like the built in plug-in browser.

I am still doing the updates the old manual way, of uploading the files to the server, is the updating via the admin section alot faster?
I know we just got 2.7, but I can’t wait for 2.8!

I was just started using WordPress 2.7. I haven’t use the previous versions. I find it very easy and intuitive. Very friendly interface.

If you change an older version and upgrade – will it affect the current status of your blog? I have a residual income blog and I don’t want any negative effects from the upgrade.
Thanks,

Isn’t this the upgrade with the bug on comments? What I mean is your visitors comments are lost after being submitted?

I helped a couple of friends upgrade to Wordpress 2.7 mainly because they were concerned that they would override their stored content from v2.5. The dashboard is a definite improvement. easier navigation on the controls and settings. It also seems more intuitive: the default view emphasizes most common tasks, by default, approving comments, replying to comments, tracking drafts, etc. Plus they added a quickpress tab, which allows short posts without a single extra click. Another appreciated feature is the display lists in table format (posts, media library, etc), allowing bloggers to decide for themselves which columns to display on the screen. And columns that were hidden may be returned to the table at any time.

It’s the first time I commented here and I must say you share us genuine, and quality information for bloggers! Good job.
p.s. You have a very good template for your blog. Where did you find it?
May 21st, 2009 at 10:15 pm
I’ve been afraid to do this. I’m bad at upgrades. I don’t know why. It’s like I attract something to go wrong or it takes me forever to learn the new navigation. Like with CS Cart. I upgraded and don’t have a clue how to do stuff now. Ugg.

Seems a bit easier to use then the current version… I think as a general rule, upgrading to newer versions of any software is a good idea, particularly in instances where support is required, as my belief is that IT companies intentional provide poorer support to older versions of software in order to get people to upgrade, so they only have to manage a single version…

Did you upgrade to 2.9.1 yet?
I am still with 2.9, not sure if I should do the update, as some plugins are not compatible.

Build Traffic!
Here is an old rule! If you want to be really successful in affiliate marketing, you ought to drive traffic to your website. The more visitors to the website, the higher the probability of click through. Many affiliate guides forget to mention that it is always prudent to build traffic first and then consider affiliate marketing. There is no magic potion. If there is no traffic, there are no profits. Don’t worry, if you haven’t got hordes of visitors, even a few visitors will do initially. Once these visitors start trickling down the web drain, you can place banners and advertising in appropriate places to get the results. A good affiliate marketer doesn’t care about the number of clicks but on the average number of clicks per visitor.
Such techniques, slowly but surely brings success. And with it comes a potential for much higher rewards………
