BBC Entertainment has been running a couple of Derren Brown’s shows here in South Africa. Derren is a UK magician and “psychological illusionist” who specializes in getting people to do things they wouldn’t normally do through the use of “magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship”.
Much of what he does is based on suggestion and the power of subliminal persuasion. In the clip I’ve linked to here, he uses NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) techniques to get a specific result, and in the last minute of the clip he shows what he did.
Copywriters have been using these techniques for many years to get people to buy – it’s interesting to see them in direct action like this.

I think it much more likely that he switched the envelopes. BUt, Ive seen this guy before I think (it was a chess game against experts) and I like his style.

Brown is something of a genius. Brilliant trick designer and highly skilled at sleight of hand. There may be some use of elements of NLP in his work (although his is rather disparaging of NLP in his book ‘Tricks of the Mind’) – but he disguises them heavily.
In fact the only think you can be pretty sure of is that the methods he claims he is using are almost certainly not the ones he really did use.
