BBC Entertainment has been running a couple of Derren Brown’s shows here in South Africa. Derren is a UK magician and “psychological illusionist” who specializes in getting people to do things they wouldn’t normally do through the use of “magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship”.
Much of what he does is based on suggestion and the power of subliminal persuasion. In the clip I’ve linked to here, he uses NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) techniques to get a specific result, and in the last minute of the clip he shows what he did.
Copywriters have been using these techniques for many years to get people to buy - it’s interesting to see them in direct action like this.

Derrick,
This is amusing and interesting, but as with many of Brown’s tricks is not all it seems. What do you think is more likely?
That he can perform these apparent miracles?
Or he switched the letters?

That is a great trick. I will try this with my wife for her next birthday. Somehow I do think it will work in this case. But I’ll surely try

I think it much more likely that he switched the envelopes. BUt, Ive seen this guy before I think (it was a chess game against experts) and I like his style.

OK, now you have me Googling Neuro-Linguistic Programming. I do wonder how much the room suggestions really mattered?
I would like to use this for AdWords…

I have been a bit dubious about his tricks since he admitted that his russian roulette trick was performed with a blank bullett.

A blank bullet at point-blank range could cause considerable damage to a person’s head. And Derren is quite open about the fact that he uses deception at times.
