Making Money With Social Media
By Derrick | June 8, 2008
Can you use social networking sites, like Facebook, to make money? Just ask Brian Campbell – he made over $25,000 in three weeks, using Facebook. And the techniques he used will work on other social networks, like MySpace, Bebo, LinkedIn and Hi5.
So what’s the secret? I can’t reveal all of Brian’s secrets in this post – he created a 3 1/2 hour video training program to explain everything. But what I can tell you is this:
You need to create a network of contacts. Start with your friends. You can invite between 20 and 30 people a day to become your friend – if you invite too many, Facebook will tell you to slow down. You can find people who are interested in the same things you are by joining groups, and looking through the lists of members.
It’s important to send a personal message to everyone you invite. People are more likely to confirm your request if you let them know that you share a common interest. If it’s someone whose name you recognise, tell them so!
The best way to get friends is by having people invite you to become their friend. You do this by being visible – and being sociable – posting comments, photos and videos on your friends’ profiles, for example.
The next step is to create your own group, and eventually a number of groups. Groups are made up of people who share a common interest. You can only send messages to groups with 1200 people or fewer, so you’ll need to change your group from ‘public’ to ‘private’ once you have more than 1000 members or so.
Reward people for joining your group by giving them good quality information, in the form of articles, videos and downloads – PDF reports are great.
Your network of contacts will be all the people you can reach – your friends, and the people in your groups (who don’t necessarily have to be your friends). Eventually, you’ll want to start moving people off Facebook and onto your mailing list, so that you can contact them by e-mail.
You can learn more about using Facebook and other social media to build your business by joining Brian’s free course, Social Media Monetization System. He’s giving away over 10 hours of free training, but seats are limited, so join right now.

It’s actually really hard work trying to get the right types to join lists from social media sites. I spent countless hours building up a myspace profile, and in the end the conversion rate of the traffic from a complete waste of time. I wouldn’t spend a cent on training videos about marketing to social media sites.

Hey Simon,
Thanks for the comment. I had a look at your site and your MySpace profile – great graphics!
There’s a bit more to social media sites than hoping people will click on a link on your profile… Do you have a list?
Brian’s training is free, so you may want to take a look. It concentrates on Facebook, but he is starting to do some stuff on MySpace as well – they’re very different.

There’s a great debate on whether or not you can actually make money from social networking. I guess some ppl can by building apps but to make “friends” and such? I’m curious but not convinced.

I am interested in it, and I am going to try it, but I am not sure I will succeed in making money from social network, because it is very hard.
