Earlier this year, eBay switched their affiliate program over from Commission Junction to an in-house program, eBay Partner Network. I had applied for the affiliate program when it was still with CJ, and got a ‘No thanks’ from them. ‘Aha!’ I thought. CJ was obviously the problem – eBay’s own program will be much more enlightened and forward-thinking.

As it turns out, eBay still unfortunately could not accept my application at that time. I know they must have been devastated.

Fortunately, that may have been a blessing in disguise. It seems that many people who were relying on eBay Partner Network for an income were suddenly and unceremoniously dropped from the program a month ago.

Judging by the share performance, which has dropped from around $40 in October last year to under $24 today, eBay’s shareholders aren’t too excited about the way the company is being run.

Is the world’s largest online auction site poised at the brink of a precipice? Has the corporate mentality taken over? Are they going to continue to alienate their partners, users and supporters?

Photo: iStockphoto

If you’re just getting started with affiliate marketing, ClickBank is one of the best affiliate networks to sign up with. Their business model is quite different from that of the big networks like Commission Junction, which means that they can be much more relaxed about who they let in to their network.

The big affiliate networks make their money by charging their advertisers fees for accessing their network. Since most of them have a relatively small number of advertisers, that makes them vulnerable to conditions imposed by the advertisers. For instance, an advertiser can decide that they won’t work with anyone outside the USA, or that they won’t consider advertising on sites with fewer than 50,000 page views a month or whatever. Fair enough, even Google Adwords lets you choose which sites you don’t want your ads to appear on.

ClickBank, on the other hand, doesn’t charge anyone anything until they have the buyer’s cash in hand. At that point, they deduct their fees and share what’s left over between the publisher (the seller) and the affiliate. Since they’re not charging the publisher up front, and since they have well over 10,000 publishers, they don’t need to be picky about who they do business with.

What this boils down to is that you don’t need to prove that you have a website and 5,000 unique visitors a month to get a ClickBank affiliate account. All you need is to fill in a relatively simple form which tells ClickBank where to send your money.

One of the simplest and cheapest ways to get started with affiliate marketing is by setting up a blog on Blogger.com and reviewing a Clickbank product. As with many online strategies, this one depends largely on your being able to drive a stream of traffic to your review site. Without traffic, you’ll make no money.

I’ve found a terrific series of 7 short videos which explain exactly how to set up this kind of review blog, and how to drive traffic to it. There’s 85 minutes of video, and no throat-clearing or time-wasting. The traffic-building techniques you’ll learn from this video course will work for any website, so it’s a great foundation for any online business. If you can’t make money online using these methods, you may as well go home.

You can get the videos at www.CBRevelation.com. I’m selling them for $7.00, which I reckon is way less than they’re worth.

Jeremy Palmer has opened his Black Ink Project to an additional 2000 subscribers.
The Black Ink Project is an affiliate success course which runs over 8 weeks starting tomorrow (Monday 5th May). There are 4 week-long modules, with 1 week breaks in between. The course will be presented in the form of hour-long webinars, with a 30 minute Q&A session after each one.

The course content will cover:

Setting realistic goals, based on your time and budget.

Researching prospective opportunities.

Learning the software, scripts, and tools to help you create your site.

Develop and launch a campaign from start to finish.

The most interesting thing about this course is that it’s free. You can read about Jeremy’s thinking which led to the Black Ink Project on his blog.

If you haven’t already signed up, I would urge you to do so now – assuming that you are willing to commit the time and effort.

Jeremy recommends that you read (or re-read) his ebook, High Performance Affiliate Marketing, before you start.

If you don’t know what Bum Marketing is, you must have been hiding under a rock. It’s basically a new name for article marketing, except that instead of including a link back to your own website, bum marketers put in a link to an affiliate sales page.

There are some skills involved – the main one is finding a product that you can write a good ‘pre-sell’ article about. I’m giving away a great report about Bum Marketing which explains how to find the right product, how to research the best keywords to use and how to quickly write articles and submit them to article directories.

You don’t have to be a great writer, the skills are useful for marketing any kind of site, and the technique is completely free. What are you waiting for?
