Well, after a titanic struggle, I’ve managed to get a little mini-course online at www.lxcoza.com/adwordstips. It’s a nice little sequence of crucial Adwords concepts – where to use capitalisation, using Adgroups, that sort of thing.
If you’re wondering about the URL, my working life up to now has been spent as a lighting technician and designer, and in the theatre, LX is the abbreviation for ‘Electrics’, which is the term still (sometimes) used to refer to the Head Electrician and his department, and really anything to do with electricity (replacing the bulbs in the toilets comes to mind).
When I first started toying with the Internet, I found that the URL ‘lx.co.za’ was available, so I snagged it. The ‘.co.za’ is the top-level domain for South Africa. My host back then gave me the user name ‘lxcoza’, and I’ve used it ever since. It’s short, meaningless (like ‘Kodak’) and easily remembered.
By the way, if you’re looking for hosting, I have not come across a better deal than the one offered by Hostgator. Unlike most web hosts, who allow you to set up one domain name per account, or perhaps 3, or 6 domain names, Hostgator allows unlimited domains and unlimited MySQL databases, for under $10 a month.
What that means is that if you decide to create a minisite, for instance, all you need to do is register a domain name, then point its DNS address to your Hostgator account. I use DomainTools to check whether a name is registered, and then Spry.com to do the registration, at $7.95 a time. It takes about 5 minutes ( and a little while for the DNS information to propagate through the ‘net).
Other good things about Hostgator:
- They don’t force you to sign up for a 1 year contract, like most inexpensive hosts.
- They actively recommend against having your domain registration and hosting done by the same company.
- They offer excellent service by live chat, telephone and email.
